What a Lock Change or Replacement Actually Involves
Many people are unsure whether they need the whole lock replaced or just the cylinder changed. On most uPVC and composite doors — which are common throughout Dagenham's newer builds and housing association properties — the working part is a euro cylinder. Replacing just the cylinder is usually sufficient, leaves the door furniture intact, and can be done without any damage to the frame. On older timber front doors, particularly on the period terraces around Becontree and Chadwell Heath, you are more likely to have a 5-lever mortice deadlock alongside a Yale-type nightlatch. Both can be replaced individually or together, depending on what your insurer requires. Our technician will assess the door on arrival and explain exactly what is needed before any work begins.
It is also worth understanding euro cylinder vulnerabilities. Cylinder snapping is a well-documented method of forced entry, and older cylinders — especially those that protrude more than a few millimetres beyond the door face — are at particular risk. We carry anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-drill cylinders rated to TS007 3-star, which is the standard most home insurers recognise. If your insurer asks for a BS3621 mortice deadlock, we can supply and fit that too. We will never recommend a part you do not need, and we will never begin work until you have agreed the full quoted price.
